the improtant of good sportsmanship

The Importance of Sportsmanship

On the heels of the unfortunate incident at Tempe High School last week, I thought it was appropriate to revisit the notion of sportsmanship. To our young Eagles who may not fully understand the concept… you know how Coach Gene always says “Do the little things right, and big things will happen”? Well, sportsmanship is one of those “little things” that leads to “big things” happening.

So what is Sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship is a great tradition in sports and competition that means playing clean and handling both victory and defeat with grace, style, and dignity. This is the reason why you guys line up after each game to shake the hands of your opponents at the end of each game… win or lose.

Sportsmanship includes playing fair, following the rules of the game, respecting the judgment of referees, and treating your opponents with respect. As a general rule of thumb, it makes sense to look at sportsmanship in a similar way that we view friendship… treat the people you play with and against as you would like to be treated yourself.

You demonstrate good sportsmanship when you show respect for yourself, your teammates, and your opponents, for the coaches on both sides, and for the referees, judges, and other officials.

But sportsmanship isn’t just reserved for the people on the field. Cheerleaders, fans, and parents also need to be aware of how they behave during competition. Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude, and it can have a positive influence on everyone around you.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES PART 3

Student Responsibilities

Part 3

What is important to you is that you, as you start to reach milestones in your ambitions, you appreciate your own achievements, it is a boost, of course, if others appreciate what you have done to, but appreciating yourself will strengthen  your self-belief and reinforce your determination to succeed .

Some of the key characteristics you will find in those who are successful are perseverance, prepared to research, plan and work hard, practice a lot even when things do not seem to be going well, and an ability to recover and learn setbacks at the outset of whatever it is you are to succeed in, a strong vision of your future, planning, and setting yourself achievable targets can all play an important role.

If you feel you do not naturally have all those characteristics then do not despair each of  them can be accomplished by own application you can use mediation and visualization techniques to initiate your vision and they can certainly be learnt both for that purpose and for each step you take to reach your goal setting goals and objective can be a personal or business technique that can be learnt you can develop inner strength  to succeed if you apply yourself to doing just that; that will enable you to recover from setback more easily

STUDENT RESPONIBILITY PART 2

Student responsibility

Part 2

7. I have the responsibility to do every bit of assigned homework with proper attention and them to pursue their own interests and practise skills in a variety of ways. Cater for different learning styles. Don’t expect everyone to respond in the same way. Integrate technology to encourage creative expression of learning.

8. Don’t play guess what’s in my head

Ask open-ended questions, with plenty of possible answers which lead to further questions. Acknowledge all responses equally. Use Thinking Routines to provide a framework for students to engage with new learning by making connections, thinking critically and exploring possibilities.

9. Talk less

Minimise standing out front and talking at them. Don’t have rows of learners facing the front of the class. Arrange the seats so that students can communicate, think together, share ideas and construct meaning by discussing and collaborating. Every exchange doesn’t need to go through the teacher or get the teacher’s approval, encourage students to respond directly to each other.

10. Model behaviors and attitudes that promote learning.

Talk about your own learning. Be an inquirer. Make your thinking process explicit. Be an active participant in the learning community. Model and encourage enthusiasm, open-mindedness, curiosity and reflection. Show that you value initiative above compliance.

11. Ask for feedback

Get your students to write down what they learned, whether they enjoyed a particular learning experience, what helped their learning, what hindered their learning and what might help them next time. Use a Thinking Routine like ‘Connect, extend, challenge’. Take notice of what they write and build learning experiences based on it.

12. Test less

Record student thinking and track development over time. Provide opportunities for applying learning in a variety of ways. Create meaningful assessment tasks that allow transfer of learning to other contexts. Have students publish expressions of their learning on the internet for an authentic audience. Place as much value on process and progress as on the final product.

13. Encourage goal setting and reflection.

Help students to define goals for their
